Vietnam Busts Multi-Million Soccer Betting Ring

Police around the world have some success to show for their efforts in cracking down on illegal betting organizations that accept wagers on soccer. The latest operation took place in Vietnam, where the country’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) cracked down on a $34.6-million soccer betting ring.
Authorities were able to apprehend 19 people in total, tied to the organization, and remanded them into custody. Initial raids led to the arrest of 17 people; however, investigators later expanded the investigation and apprehended two additional suspects. The ring had been running since December 2024.
Vietnamese Police Shutters Betting Ring
One of the arrested individuals is believed to be the ringleader. The operation relied on betting points, with roughly 30 million points placed on an illegal gambling website, translating to $34.6 million in total.
The ringleader has been identified as Nguyễn Viết Duy, who operated a Super Master Agent account, according to investigators, with a monthly credit limit of 6–6.5 million points.
The account level was directly linked to the structure of the betting ring, with Master, Agent, and Member accounts, allowing the illicit business to continue operations.
The ring was based on proxy betting, with the organizer and his subordinates using their accounts to accept wagers from interested parties and settle bets on the platform. Wins and losses were settled through direct bank payments, which were sometimes obfuscated by moving money around.
These transactions were settled on Mondays only. Police report that the operation has now been fully dismantled, with the ringleader, high-ranking members, and other related suspects arrested.
This is not the first time Vietnamese police have been able to dismantle a large-scale gambling operation that has been operating without a license. A similar operation launched in December 2025 led to the arrest of 31 people, including 30 Chinese nationals. The betting ring was estimated to be worth $38 million at the time.
