Join us atSanguineas sound designer and artistSkoobyLaposky collects biodata from plants withinRashidJohnsons work using electrodes attached to their leaves, whichdetectchanges in electrical conductivity. These fluctuationscaused by processes like water movement and photosynthesisare converted into musical data andtranslated into soundthroughamodularsynthesizersystem.This process, known as bio-sonification,producesa unique real-time musical outputgenerated bytheplantsthemselves.Harlem School of the ArtsmusicdirectorShellyBauerwill then join Laposky for aperformanceinspiredand informedby thesesonicpatterns.

On the occasion ofRashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers,the Guggenheim New York andWorks & Process co-presentThe Hikers, staged live under the direction of Johnson and choreographed by Claudia Schreier.

Originally conceived by Johnson as a film,The Hikerstells the story of two anxious travelers who cross paths and share an unexpected, profound connection for a fleeting moment.

For this special presentation, the work has been reimaginedasaliveperformanceinthe GuggenheimsRotunda, amplifying the dialogue between movement, architecture, and Johnsons expansive practice. Theperformancefeatures Lloyd Knight and Leslie Andrea Williams, both acclaimed members of the Martha Graham Dance Company, with live piano accompaniment by composer and multi-instrumentalist AkuOrraca-Tetteh.Orraca-Tetteh is the pianistandharmonizer for Florenceand theMachine andafrequent collaboratorofBill T. Jones,Santigold, TV On the Radio, andSaul Williams.
