Tesla spontaneously combusts on Sacramento freeway

I have done fire investigations and you would be surprised at how many cars just randomly catch fire. Mostly driving but sometimes just sitting there thanks to a random electrical fire. Especially on mountain highways. I regularly drive a 500km highway over a mountain every summer and I can think of several times where I counted 3 cars either actively on fire or that were a burned out husk on the side of the road on the same 1 way trip.

Your insurance company uses the following risk cars to classify cars.

Gasoline cars, non hybrid- 1340 per 100,000 will catch fire.

Hybrid cars, 3450 per 100,000.

Electric cars- 25 per 100,000.

Electric car fires are really really rare but you can be assured it makes the news because it generates clicks from the anti-ev crowd.
