GRAPHIC: Nurse Sexually Abused Coma Patient Who He Called ‘Good Dog’

A Minnesota nurse has been charged with physically and sexually abusing a patient in a coma.
On December 2, the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center alerted investigators to reports it received about James Mackey, 63, abusing a comatose patient. Mackey was seen on home security video plugging the male victim’s nose during nebulizer treatments, shoving a large item into the victim’s crotch, and slamming the victim’s limbs onto the bed, according to KAAL.
Mackey, who was hired by Regency Home Healthcare in Austin, had been caring for the victim since January 2025. The report about Mackey noted that the patient has required several hospitalizations while in his care.
According to the Post Bulletin, Mackey was also filmed putting his finger in the patient’s rectum, improperly using the patient’s tracheostomy tube, picking up the patient by his hair, switching the patient’s feeding and medication tubes, and placing a suction tube too far down the patient’s throat, which made him gag and gasp for air.
Mackey allegedly also threatened to penetrate the patient again if he did not go to sleep. He was reportedly also recorded calling the coma patient a “good dog” and telling him to bark.
The alleged incidents occurred on November 22, 26, and 28, 2025. Regency Home Healthcare said Mackey was removed from all schedules during its internal investigation.
Mackey admitted to all the actions he was seen doing on camera — but he described them as his “little tricks” for treating the patient, the Post Bulletin reported.
Mackey, who appeared in court on Tuesday, is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, including penetration, victim mentally impaired/physically helpless; felony criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult by caretaker; and three charges of gross misdemeanor fourth-degree assault of a vulnerable adult. His bail was set at $100,000 bail with conditions, or $150,000 bail without conditions.
