Contractor sought for £72m Manchester bus depot electrification job

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched procurement for the next phase of its £72m bus depot electrification programme.

The notice, published on 1 December, covers Tranche 5 of the scheme, which includes upgrades to depots in Wigan and Wythenshawe.

TfGM also indicated that the appointed contractor may be retained for Tranche 6, although the locations for this phase have not yet been confirmed.

Works will includes high-voltage installation and bus station construction.

The contract will include progressing the current RIBA Stage 2 design through to detailed design and full construction.

The total value of the deal is estimated at £60m excluding VAT.

TfGM expects to issue a market engagement notice in December, ahead of the formal invitation to tender in March 2026.

The contract is due to run from 31 July 2026 to 14 December 2029, with a possible one-year extension to account for any programme delays.

A contractor will be procured via a competitive flexible procedure under the Procurement Act 2023.

TfGM is encouraging bids from SMEs.

Tender submissions will be accepted through the ProContract e-portal, with a deadline of 30 June 2026.

The estimated award date is 17 July 2026.
