Ancient Game Gear Tank Shooter Griffin Gets World-First Western Release on PS5, PS4 1

Vertical shooter Griffin, originally made by Telenet Japan for the Game Gear back in 1991, never released outside of Japan – until now.

Ratalaika Games has been leaning into the emulation aspect of its business for quite some time, and has ported this cult tank-based shooter to both the PS5 and PS4. You can grab it now for £4.99/$5.99.

Here’s the official blurb from the press release:

“A nation developed the Griffin battle tank as a countermeasure against the growing power of a neighbouring country. However, the chief engineer of the project was kidnapped during testing. His granddaughter then boards the Griffin and begins her solo mission to rescue her grandfather!”

As with all of Ratalaika Games’ retro efforts, you can expect rewind functionality, save states, screen filters, and even cheats. There’s even a jukebox so you can listen to the release’s chiptune soundtrack on demand.

We’ve not played this one so we’re not sure exactly how well it holds up, but we sure love seeing these obscure retro releases made available on modern hardware.

Are you going to give this one a go?
