During a bustling Grammy Week in Los Angeles, gospel and R&B veteran Carvin Winans took a moment away from the industry chaos to reflect on a personal milestone. The five-time Grammy winner recently claimed his first solo Billboard #1 with “God Still Working On Me,” marking a fresh and deeply personal chapter in his storied music career.

Speaking with Digital Music News correspondent Mac Thompson, Winans shared how his latest success carries new meaning after decades of performing alongside his brothers in the celebrated group The Winans. “It’s a little bit different because the success that we were blessed to have and God bless me and my brothers, was just tremendous,” he told Thompson for DMNTV.

“I owe them everything, because working with Marvin, Ronald, and Michael, it was just fantastic! But being able to kind of stand alone—and God told me when Ronald passed—because I didn’t want to sing anymore, he said no I gave you a gift, you’ve got to use it.”

“And so being able to use that gift by myself now and being able to be blessed with the accomplishments that he’s blessed me to have it’s just very gratifying, you know,” he continues. “To look at a song going #1 and it’s just me, you know it was very gratifying and I thank God for that.”

That blend of humility and gratitude has been a thread throughout Winan’s long career. From his family roots in Detroit’s gospel scene to collaborations with top R&B artists, his voice has always carried both faith and tenderness. Now with his coming release “Shining Star,” A remix featuring Kevon Edmonds of After 7, he’s expanding his solo narrative while remaining grounded.

The renewed energy surrounding Winans underscores a wider moment for gospel music, which continues to enjoy crossover recognition on major platforms like Billboard. For Winans, however, chart positions come second to divine affirmation. His focus remains on honoring the calling that first inspired his journey—to use his gift and keep the message of faith alive.
