‘Moulin Rouge!’ Musical To End Seven-Year Broadway Run This July

Written by on February 6, 2026

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the Tony-winning stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 hit film, will end a seven-year Broadway run with a final performance on July 26 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, producers announced today.

Since opening to positive reviews and strong audiences on July 25, 2019, the musical will have played 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews when it closes, making it the 36th longest running show in Broadway history. It holds the record for the highest grossing production in the venue’s 100-year history.

While box office revenue for the musical has declined in recent years, the production frequently grossed in excess of $2 million a week during its first year and occasionally thereafter. Most recently, Moulin Rouge! posted a box office gross of $921,690 for the week ending February 1.

Though attendance for that week was at an impressive 92% of the Hirschfeld’s capacity, an average ticket price of $96.48 was considerably lower than those of newer hits like The Outsiders ($123.46), Ragtime ($132.52), Oh, Mary! ($147.63), Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ($184.73) and the priciest Just In Time ($256.28).

“It’s truly been the honor of a lifetime bringing this exceptional show to Broadway,” said producer Carmen Pavlovic of Global Creatures, who announced the closing today. “We couldn’t have done it without Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s trust in allowing us to adapt their iconic film for the stage and for their creative guidance and generosity throughout.”

Pavlovic also praised the musical’s director Alex Timbers for his “vision and leadership, along with the passion and artistry of our entire creative team.”

“We’ve always said that Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a celebration of Broadway and of the artists who, against all odds, make it possible,” she continued. “We look forward to six more months of celebrating the remarkable people who created this show and those who perform eight times a week.” She said additional announcements about the musical will be forthcoming.

Winner of ten 2021 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Moulin Rouge! features a book by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine.

The production, reportedly capitalized at around $28 million, officially recouped its Broadway investment late in 2022. After halting performances during the Covid shutdown starting in 2020, Moulin Rouge! was among the first to lead Broadway’s reopening in 2021.

In addition to Broadway, the musical is touring North America and has stagings in London, Germany, Korea, The Netherlands and a world tour. The musical had its world premiere in the summer of 2018 at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston.

The original Broadway cast included Karen Olivo, Tony winners Aaron Tveit and Danny Burstein, Robyn Hurder, Tam Mutu and Ricky Rojas, among others. The current cast includes Rojas, Meg Donnelly, Christian Douglas, Bob the Drag Queen and Samantha Dodemaide.
