Four people were killed and at least nine others injured late Monday night after a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus reversed into commuters near the bus depot outside Bhandup West railway station in Mumbai, police said. The bus driver has been detained for questioning.
The accident occurred around 10:05 pm when the area was crowded with office-goers returning home. Preliminary information suggests the bus was reversing within the depot premises when it rammed into a car and pedestrians standing nearby, triggering panic.
Police said the bus moved backwards unexpectedly and struck several people near the station entrance. Four victims died on the spot or were declared dead on arrival at hospitals, while nine others sustained injuries.
