Beloved Aussie children’s music group The Wiggles issued a statement after a music video alluding to drug use featured a clip of two of its members.
A music video for musician Keli Holiday’s new song, “Ecstasy,” featured a clip of two members from beloved Australian children’s music group The Wiggles. But the video, the song for which alludes to drug use, has given viewers on TikTok the impression that The Wiggles agreed to the clip’s use. Now, the Aussie group’s spokesperson has released a statement on the matter.
In the now-deleted clip for the song, Blue Wiggle Anthony Field and his nephew, Dominic Field (who plays the Tree of Wisdom), could be seen dancing in the background. The video had more than 92,000 views on TikTok before it was taken down.
A spokesperson for The Wiggles said the group “does not condone” the use of drugs “in any form,” and that the video was created without the band’s knowledge or approval.
“We understand that a video circulating on social media has caused concern for many parents and professionals, and we want to address that directly,” reads the group’s statement to The West Australian. “The Wiggles do not support or condone the use of drugs in any form. The content being shared was not created or approved by us, and we have asked for it to be removed.”
“While Keli Holiday is a friend of The Wiggles, the video and the music added to it were created independently and without our knowledge,” they added.
The clip itself was filmed at the TikTok Awards earlier this month, where members of The Wiggles appeared on stage with Holiday during his song “Dancing2.” The artist shared the video on TikTok with the caption, “The Wiggles get it,” to promote his new single, “Ecstasy.” The lyrics to the new track, as the title might indicate, allude to drug use, with the chorus: “Hey girl, come on dance with me / You and your pocket full of ecstasy.”
A spokesperson for The Wiggles added that the band’s performances at the awards show were “family friendly” and that the video was “edited together separately and without our awareness.”
The Wiggles were created in 1991 as part of a university assignment, and the group has gone on to become an international phenomenon for young children. Anthony Fields, the Blue Wiggle, is the only original member still with the group.
