15 fired, suspended from jobs; ‘online abuse’, Republicans’ warnings: What followed after Charlie Kirk’s murder

At least 15 people have been fired or suspended from their jobs after discussing Charlie Kirk’s assassination online. Others have been subjected to torrents of online abuse or seen their offices flooded with calls demanding they be fired, followed the fatal shooting of the Trump ally, reported Reuters.

Reportedly, Republicans have also been warning Americans to ‘mourn Charlie Kirk’s death respectfully, or suffer the consequences.’

Charlie Kirk – a Trump ally – was fatally shot during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10. The shooter – Tyler Robinson – was arrested on Friday, after an intensive manhunt that lasted over 30 hours, mentioned a report by CNN.

In the days that followed after the conservative activists’ death, people were either fired, or faced hatred online for discussing Kirk’s death.

Job losses after Charlie Kirk shooting

People who lost their jobs for discussing Charlie Kirk’s murder online, include journalists, academic workers and teachers, reported Reuters, citing interviews, public statements and local press reports.

On Friday, a junior Nasdaq employee was fired over her posts related to Charlie Kirk.

On the day of Charlie Kirk’s murder, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) fired Assistant Dean of Students Laura Sosh-Lightsy after she made social media remarks about the killing of the conservative activist.

The university said the comments, which circulated widely online, were “inappropriate and callous.”

‘need to be banned…’

US lawmaker Clay Higgins said in a post on X that anyone who “ran their mouth with their smart*** hatred celebrating the heinous murder of that beautiful young man” needed to be “banned from ALL PLATFORMS FOREVER.”

On Friday, a House tribute for Charlie Kirk erupted into a shouting match after a Republican called for a spoken prayer in memory of the activist.

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau also took to X to express that he had been disgusted to “see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action.”

‘Expose Charlie’s Murderers’ website

Amid the jobs losses and campaigns to fire Kirk’s critics, a website – “Expose Charlie’s Murderers,” was registered.

According to Reuters, the website has 41 names of people it alleged were “supporting political violence online” and claims to be working on a backlog of more than 20,000 submissions.
